CRIME NEWS

  • A son was arrested Friday after allegedly stabbing his mother in Jackson at 3:45 p.m. in the 3600 block of Newman Avenue & her injuries were not life-threatening & she is now being treated at a local hospital.  WLBT News

CULTURE NEWS

  • People from across the nation gathered at the Jackson Convention Complex to honor civil rights leader Medgar Evers on what would have been his 100th birthday. Rev. Donald Tucker recalled a time when Evers was threatened with a rifle while he worried about his family's safety — a moment that continues to inspire those fighting for justice.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Northbound lanes reopened early Friday morning on I-55 near the Pearl River Bridge after MDOT crews finished repairs and striping — the exit ramp remains closed and southbound work will finish in a couple weeks.  FOX 40
  • Starting July 1, eligible grocery items — fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy and bread — will be taxed at 5% while items like hot deli meals and alcohol will continue to be taxed at 7%.  FOX 40
  • The first phase of renovations at Parham Bridges Park on Old Canton and Ridgewood roads is complete as a new security fence is installed. The nearly $7 million project — approved by Jackson City Council last August — will add upgraded tennis courts, a new golf course, and a park trail in future phases.  WAPT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Richard Duease, Mississippi’s all-time winningest high school basketball coach at Madison-Ridgeland Academy, will retire after his final campaign this season. His 50-year career brought 1,851 wins, 41 state titles and 15 MAIS tournament championships—an honor highlighted by his 2024 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame induction.  WAPT
  • The Toronto Raptors drafted Summit native Alijah Martin with the 39th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and he now will represent Mississippi at the pro level. Martin, a North Pike High School graduate who played basketball, football and track and helped the Florida Gators win a national championship, becomes the second Gator drafted this year — a boost for local sports.  WAPT
