  • Dozens of bikers gathered on Saturday in Jackson for a memorial ride honoring retired officer Richard Polk, who died 11 years ago after saving a friend's life when his motorcycle was hit by a driver. About 40 members rode 60 miles from Jackson to Carthage to lay a wreath at his gravesite—urging drivers to stay alert on the road.  WAPT
  • On Saturday, members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity rode motorcycles through Jackson for their annual biker roundup and community service event. They stopped at Stewpot Community Services—serving hotdogs and hamburgers to up to 200 people in need.  WAPT

CRIME NEWS

  • Attorneys filed a last-minute appeal to the U.S. Fifth Circuit and a stay application to the U.S. Supreme Court after Judge Henry Wingate denied Richard Jordan’s request to block his execution scheduled for June 25—he had asked to delay the state’s lethal injection nearly 50 years after he killed Edwina Marter.  FOX 40
  • The Jackson Police Department asked for help identifying a burglary suspect who broke into a truck on the 5000 block of Carolwood Drive on June 11 at 1:30 a.m. and who was seen on surveillance wearing blue shorts, a blue t-shirt + high-top tennis shoes with red soles, gloves, and carrying a purse while also looking through mailboxes.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The former Pearl PD chief passed away while a Jackson man was held by ICE amid local outcry — a new HIV prevention medication was approved to help reduce infections.  FOX 40
  • The Mississippi House of Representatives killed SB 2050 on May 29 — a bill designed to fund $13 million in upgrades at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park and $5 million for a new building at the Children’s Museum — leaving the projects without state support.  FOX 40
  • Lawmakers in Jackson are pushing to make Juneteenth a state holiday even though ten bills filed this session died in committee—Representative Daryl Porter said it honors African American history while Senator Derrick Simmons wants to replace Confederate Memorial Day with Juneteenth. Both lawmakers say the change would better recognize the state’s past.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA approved the new HIV prevention drug Yeztugo which only needs to be injected twice a year to help lower HIV risk. Jackson hospitals and clinics that took part in trials showed 99.9% of participants stayed HIV negative—local doctors now expect the medicine will soon be available to those who need it.  FOX 40
  • AMR warned Jackson residents on Friday that dangerous heat began with the start of summer and urged them to drink water, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and call 911 if heat stroke symptoms appear — construction workers were also reminded to take regular water breaks while working outdoors.  FOX 40
