GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge will decide next week if Jackson will face an 11.7% water rate increase that could raise monthly bills by about $8 to $12. • The Jackson City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to urge the federal government to reverse its decision to remove Medgar Wiley Evers' name from a Navy ship that was christened in 2011. Hinds County District 2 Supervisor Wanda Evers said she will travel to Washington to meet with the president and protest the change.  FOX 40
  • Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin told U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate at the courthouse that nearly $90 million from the Siemens settlement was not fully used for water and sewer work and that about $60 million appears to have been spent elsewhere — he is now reviewing the fund allocation as the city handles high bond costs and rising rates.  FOX 40
