CRIME NEWS

  • Police reported one person died and another was hospitalized after a shooting at a McDonald’s in Brandon on Monday evening at 6:51 p.m.—investigators say the suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the incident appears isolated.  WAPT
  • Four suspects pleaded guilty in federal court to drug conspiracy charges+ one also pleaded guilty to a firearms charge after their arrest last year during a multi-year drug bust, and five others will face trial on September 2+ with sentencing set for three on September 3.  FOX 40
  • Jackson Police are seeking a suspect who robbed a Boost Mobile store on Bobby Rush Boulevard by shoving an employee and taking an iPhone 16 Pro shortly before 1 p.m. Monday (the suspect wore a tan or white hooded sweatshirt and dark shorts) (he has black hair with a red patch).  WLBT News
  • Four suspects pleaded guilty in federal court after being arrested last year in a multi-year drug investigation in Jackson — Marcus Naylor, James Naylor, Tony Butler and Donald Jordan each admitted to conspiracy charges with Butler also admitting a firearm charge — while five others await trial.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 2025 HBCU Labor Day Classic Battle of the Bands will bring over 60,000 fans to Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson on Saturday, Aug. 31 as it debuts in a city known as the Marching Band Capital of the World. The event will kick off with a Fanfest at noon and open gates at 5 p.m.—bands will parade at 5:30 p.m. before the main show starts at 6 p.m.  WAPT
  • Kerry Kennedy will join Ambassador Attallah Shabazz, Bettie Dahmer and Reena Evers-Everette on June 26 at the Jackson Convention Complex for the 'Daddy's Daughters' panel— the first event of a weeklong series honoring Medgar Evers’ centennial.  Mississippi Today

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mississippi Today in partnership with JPMorganChase will present All In on Mississippi, a free event on Monday, July 28 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mississippi Museum of Art in downtown Jackson. The gathering will feature a fireside chat with JPMorganChase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon — and it will conclude with a public reception at the organization’s new office.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a public hearing on Monday at the federal courthouse, Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin addressed U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate’s questions about nearly $90 million from a Siemens settlement intended for water and sewer improvements. Residents waited three hours to speak+Henifin said about $60 million was not used for these bills and he will review how the remaining funds were spent.  WLBT News
  • On Monday, interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin told U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate at a federal courthouse that the city used nearly $60 million from the Siemens settlement on items other than water and sewer services—only a small part went to pay bills, and the rest remains unaccounted for. Henifin defended a planned water rate increase to cover growing expenses while residents waited three hours to give their input.  FOX 40
