  • On June 10, the Junior League of Jackson announced a $100k donation to the Foundation for Mississippi History to support building Margaret Ann Crigler Park next to the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. The park is designed as a green space — with an open lawn, children's play area, outdoor stage, and native landscaping — that will serve as a community gathering spot in downtown Jackson.  FOX 40

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In Raymond, basketball star Cameron Woodall, 25, died Sunday when a tire blew out on his ATV and sent him crashing into a tree on Midway Road—funeral arrangements are being planned for Saturday with local schools hosting memorial events.  WAPT

CRIME NEWS

  • LeAndrew Williams was sentenced to 40 years in prison for first-degree murder after he shot Jimmie Lee Pierce twice with a 9mm handgun during an attempted robbery at Northwest Plaza Apartments in Jackson—Williams targeted Pierce after finding explicit messages on his mother's phone.  WLBT News
  • Jackson police say a woman was shot and killed Tuesday morning on the 3600 block of Jayne Avenue—her identity was not released and no suspect was identified.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A coalition of educators, civil rights groups, and legal organizations filed a federal lawsuit on June 9 against Mississippi public school boards to block a new law that bans diversity, equity and inclusion programs, saying it violates the First and 14th Amendments + the law limits teaching on topics like slavery and civil rights. The law, authored by Rep. Joey Hood, will go into effect on July 1 + its unclear complaint process leaves schools without a set method to address violations.  Mississippi Free Press
  • Incumbent Ashby Foote leads challengers Grace Greene & Jasmine Barnes in a very close Ward One council race, though officials will begin counting pending affidavit ballots today at 10 a.m. while all mail-in votes received until Tuesday remain to be tallied.  WLBT News
