  • Mississippi State Senator Derrick T. Simmons urged Delta cities to set a curfew after 10-year-old Zameria Jones was fatally shot on Memorial Day in Greenwood—Greenville mayor Errick Simmons has already enacted a city curfew as local leaders are urged to follow.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson's local Mississippi Pickle Fest celebrated its 5th year with a two-day event—featuring pickle-themed contests and vendor booths from across the state—sparked by a young employee's creative idea that launched the festival.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • District Three Supervisor Deborah Butler Dixon said she has monitored constituent concerns by touring affected areas and installing cameras on Veterans Boulevard and Linbergh Drive—efforts that have halted illegal dumping. She has paved 53 streets and distributed over 300 address signs—measures meant to improve emergency response and invite resident feedback.  FOX 40
  • John Horhn was chosen as mayor with 67 percent of the vote and will take office on July 1, planning to modernize the fire department's early alert system with a $2 million upgrade and to spread road repair funds evenly across the city. He said he will first observe city operations before making staffing changes and will review budgets while developing a master plan to improve public safety and infrastructure across Jackson — a move that marks a shift in local government priorities.  FOX 40
  • Two Jackson Public Schools employees were placed on administrative leave after an internal audit found $221,000 in improperly disbursed funds + the district reported the error to the state auditor and launched a full investigation.  FOX 40
