CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Mississippi State Senator Derrick T. Simmons urged Delta cities to adopt a curfew after a 10-year-old girl was shot in Greenwood on Memorial Day—he commended the Greenville mayor for setting a city-wide curfew and called on other leaders to act to keep streets safe. FOX 40
- ➤ Officers responded to a local hospital after a female sustained an apparent gunshot wound and later went to her residence (where she displayed a firearm) and exchanged gunfire with officers; she suffered critical injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. WAPT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The State Fire Marshals Office inspected Thalia Mara Hall on June 3rd and confirmed that a successful hydrostatic test on June 2nd showed safe pipes and valves, so the building now meets standards to reopen. The hall must have a third-party fire watch until a new fire curtain installed in July passes inspection (elevators and escalators remain out of service until repairs are complete). FOX 40
- ➤ Jackson Public Schools announced on Thursday that longtime choir director James Hawkins passed away. His leadership led the Jim Hill choir to win national and international awards + many former students credited his teaching for launching successful music careers. FOX 40
- ➤ The Mississippi Pickle Festival is underway at the Mississippi Ag Museum as pickle lovers line up for the two-day event presented by the Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Museum Foundation. The festival runs until 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today (tickets cost $15 for ages 3 and up) and features a contest with a thousand-dollar prize along with various pickle offerings. - ➤ A former mayor and longtime pastor announced Mayor-elect John Horhn’s transition team, which includes former mayor Kane Ditto, former judge Robert Gibbs, and Bishop Ronnie Crudup as he prepares to take office on July 1. He also named interim chief of staff Willie Bozeman and interim media spokesman Von Anderson—steps following his recent landslide election win. FOX 40
- ➤ Jackson voters elected State Sen. John Horhn with 67% of the vote, and he said he will soon begin a $2 million early alert system for the fire department while planning new road repairs and a comprehensive master plan to serve all areas in the city. Horhn said he will review department leadership and start a resume portal before signing a long-pending interlocal agreement — steps aimed at improving safety and infrastructure across Jackson.
