CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson's Thalia Mara Hall was cleared for reopening on June 3 after nearly a year of mold remediation, HVAC upgrades, and fire system repairs that began last August. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson voters elected State Sen. John Horhn as mayor with 67 percent of the vote, and today he outlined plans to modernize city services through projects like a $2 million early alert system for the fire department and improved road repairs. Horhn said he will review department leadership, sign an interlocal agreement with county officials, and develop a master plan using funds from the one-cent sales tax once he takes office on July 1—efforts aimed at spreading resources more evenly.  FOX 40
  • The city recorded 35% fewer homicides and almost half as many shootings during 100 Days of Peace from Feb. 27 to June 6 — but officials remain unsure if this drop stems from community programs or high jail bonds after the violence prevention director was fired.  Mississippi Today
  • Mississippi State Senator Derrick T. Simmons urged a Delta-wide curfew after a 10-year-old girl was fatally shot in Greenwood on Memorial Day (he commended Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons for starting a curfew and urged other cities to follow suit to protect communities).  FOX 40
