EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jackson State University began a $22 million dining hall expansion that will offer flexible dining & study spaces and seat up to 550 guests. The project, aimed at improving campus life, is expected to complete by summer 2027. WAPT
- ➤ The Mississippi Department of Education announced that 75.6% of third graders passed the state reading exam on their first try on May 21. The state will review district practices and offer additional teacher training (a slight decline from last year). Mississippi Free Press
- ➤ Jackson Public Schools recorded a record $64 million in scholarships as nearly 300 seniors graduated, with Jim Hill High awarding over $33 million — supporting students headed to college and Navy ROTC programs. WAPT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local residents voiced concerns about a new flood-control proposal targeting the Pearl River at a May 16 meeting at Sheppard Brothers Park, fearing environmental impacts and rising costs for taxpayers. Federal agencies will release a final study later this year & the public will have 30 days to review it. Mississippi Free Press
- ➤ The Mississippi Department of Transportation closed the northbound I-55 ramp to I-220 south at Exit 104 in Madison County at midnight Tuesday and it remains closed until 6 a.m. June 17 for bridge repairs including deck and end wall work. WAPT
