COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jackson pools will reopen May 30 with swim lessons and open swim sessions offered at Vine Street, VA, and Mill Street Pools along with splash pads at Presidential Hill and the Jackson Zoo and a sprinkler pad at Lake Hico. The city will charge $3 for adults and provide lifeguards and pool managers for safety while the South Jackson Terry Road pool stays closed for pump and electrical repairs estimated at $18,000 and Grove Park remains under renovation — officials plan to share additional details soon.  WAPT

CRIME NEWS

  • Police made two additional arrests in connection with the May 7 Holden Street shooting that killed 19-year-old Zephaniah Thompson—Michael Kelly Jr. is charged with murder while Ty'Misha Trotter faces accessory charges and a Nissan Versa used in the incident was recovered.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson fired Keisha Coleman, director of its Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery, on May 7 after she said her dismissal came because she spoke with a political opponent and raised concerns over fund misuse. The mayor’s chief of staff called her claims false – the office now awaits a new director under a hiring freeze until a new mayor takes over.  WLBT News
  • Kim Wade dropped out of the Jackson mayor race on May 23—her exit narrows the field for voters.  WLBT News
  • Gov. Reeves announced on Friday that he will call a special session next week for lawmakers to pass a $7 billion state budget after the regular session ended without one. Some legislators said the session is expected to begin on Wednesday morning (exact time not yet confirmed) and that the budget must be approved before July 1 to avoid agency shutdowns.  Mississippi Today
  • A federal judge denied Mississippi's motion to dismiss a lawsuit challenging efforts to take over Jackson—Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport, so the case will proceed through normal legal channels. City leaders said they will provide more details next week as they fight to keep control of the airport.  WAPT
