COMMUNITY NEWS

  • John Marshall—owner of The Living Room—said he closed the business until zoning issues are sorted after large crowds on Farish Street raised safety concerns. Neighbors and officials will discuss the matter at the city council meeting today at 6 p.m.  WAPT
  • Madison County leaders unveiled a new softball field today at Camden during the fifth annual community festival—U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson attended and officials said more amenities, like swimming pools and walking trails, are planned to support local families.  WAPT
  • A public celebration of life service for Alex “Buddy” Cooper will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Florence. Family, friends, neighbors and community members are invited to attend and honor his legacy as a cherished Santa Claus performer.  WAPT
  • Hundreds gathered in Flowood yesterday for the 17th Methodist Rehab Walk & Roll to celebrate recovery and raise funds for research and innovative therapy equipment. The event raised a record $176,000 with Team Sam leading fundraising and featured former patients, families, and supporters.  WAPT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson's Freedom band helped shape early hip-hop by playing a hit song after a breakthrough at a Jackson State talent show & later being sampled by top artists. Their music still lives on today, although their role is not widely known.  WAPT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA said the national average for gas is $4.51 & up from $2.66 last year, raising costs for 45 million travelers planning trips of at least 50 miles from May 21 to May 25. A Raymond resident expects to pay double for fuel on her trip home to Ocean Springs.  WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Madison Avenue Elementary School's Reading Garden received a new mural by Lucia Duque on Friday, May 1, which brightens the outdoor space for students & community. Extra seating is added and a reading shed is planned, creating a cozy spot to enjoy books.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Medgar Evers Library is temporarily closed after an HVAC failure caused high indoor temperatures that made the building unsafe. City officials approved repairs in October to address the recurring cooling issues, but the reopening date remains unknown.  WAPT
  • Flowood officials adopted the new city flag designed by a local student during a public meeting on Monday, May 18 at city hall & they said the design represents community pride and progress.  WLBT News
