The 5th Annual Cars for Kids & Poker Run has been rescheduled for today, offering a day of horsepower, hometown fun and heartfelt giving.

Glen Rogers, 62, accused of killing Jackson woman Linda Price and other women he met in bars was executed in Florida on Thursday by lethal injection (Price, a 34-year-old mother, was stabbed to death in her Jackson home on November 3).

Results from this spring show that 77.3% of Mississippi third graders passed the reading assessment for the 2024-25 school year—25,399 students met the mark on their first try, the highest rate recorded.

Third graders must pass the test to move to fourth grade.

Two community groups with ties to the mayor’s sister filed a motion on May 15 to update the 2022 order for the city’s water system—asserting that emergency conditions no longer exist and that the interim manager must follow state law for bidding and record requests—after earlier transparency concerns. The motion also calls for banning the manager from lobbying on water system matters.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has earmarked $32 million for the Yazoo Backwater Area Water Management Project to meet flood protection needs and will use $13 million for repairs and safety measures at Arkabutla Lake (these funds are part of $136.5 million in FY2025 appropriations). Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith said the funds will help protect the south Delta region and prepare it for future flood risks.

The Mississippi Department of Health began investigating Chapel Ridge Apartments after residents had to dump trash on the ground when dumpsters were removed — state Representative Fabian Nelson and Councilman Vernon Hartley urged the city to enforce local codes to protect public health.

In Jackson, many residents are starting backyard gardens to grow fruits and vegetables that help cut grocery bills and feed families.
