EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Results from this spring show that 77.3% of Mississippi third graders passed the reading assessment for the 2024-25 school year—25,399 students met the mark on their first try, the highest rate recorded. Third graders must pass the test to move to fourth grade. WLBT News

- ➤ Two community groups with ties to the mayor’s sister filed a motion on May 15 to update the 2022 order for the city’s water system—asserting that emergency conditions no longer exist and that the interim manager must follow state law for bidding and record requests—after earlier transparency concerns. - ➤ The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has earmarked $32 million for the Yazoo Backwater Area Water Management Project to meet flood protection needs and will use $13 million for repairs and safety measures at Arkabutla Lake (these funds are part of $136.5 million in FY2025 appropriations).
