  • Residents at Chapel Ridge Apartments in West Jackson are upset because trash has piled up for the past two weeks after the property owner stopped paying for garbage service. City and state officials said they are working on an emergency cleanup and code enforcement will take legal action—residents say the living conditions pose health risks.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • Jackson police reported a 50% drop in homicides from 44 to 22 and a 20% decline in armed robberies of individuals with a near 8% drop in armed carjackings—while business robberies soared by 267% and reports of rape/sexual battery increased by 36%, a suspect was arrested for multiple business robberies and investigations continue.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marcus Thompson resigned last week as Jackson State University's president, marking the third leadership change in a decade. Alumni and state lawmakers say the college board held a closed two-hour meeting—leaving key questions unanswered—and must become more transparent in selecting future presidents.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Court of Appeals ruled IMS Engineers is not liable for the death of Jackson Academy senior Frances Fortner, who was killed in 2018 when her car hit an unsecured manhole cover on Ridgewood Road — the court said the firm had ended its work on the project before the accident.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • A free community pharmacy opened today at the Saxony Building off North Frontage Road to provide essential medications to residents facing financial challenges. The pharmacy qualifies patients based on their need and runs on walk-in hours every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon with support from volunteers and local nursing homes.  WAPT
  • Mississippi's kindergarten vaccination rates fell from first to fourth in the nation after religious exemptions increased—with over 5,800 exemption requests since 2023 including more than 800 this year. Health officials stress that while overall immunization remains high, clusters of unvaccinated children could face a higher risk of measles and pertussis outbreaks.  Mississippi Today
