COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mississippi State Fair will be held in Jackson from October 2 to 13 and will feature rides, food, agricultural competitions—family fun for all. Last year, the fair attracted about 506,952 visitors and generated nearly $31 million in economic impact, and officials will announce more details soon.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

CRIME NEWS

  • Jackson man Jayleen Jefferson, 30, pleaded guilty to grand larceny for stealing work trailers in Ridgeland and Brandon by using rental vehicles—switched tags, false alibis, and forged documents—to amass over $100,000 in losses and was sentenced to 15 years in prison with restitution ordered.  WAPT
  • Michael McLeod—a former UMMC officer and one of two brothers charged in a downtown mass shooting that killed 21-year-old Cortez George and injured six after a parade—will appear in court on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Hinds County Courthouse, and both brothers have denied the charges.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Jackson City Council approved a contract on Tuesday to install new traffic lights along Bobby Rush Boulevard. The signals—set for intersections such as Highway 80, Lynch Street, Robinson Road and Westhaven Boulevard—are expected to speed up traffic.  WAPT
  • Mississippi state government may shut down in less than two months if House and Senate leaders do not reach a budget deal by July 1. Governor Tate Reeves said he will call a special session if the disagreement over local infrastructure funding—central to the impasse—continues.  Mississippi Free Press
  • Moss Point resident Nelson Webb, Jr. said the city forced him to tear down his fire-damaged home by May 16 because it is in a flood zone and has not been fixed since a 2017 fire + city officials say it is a menace property that risks flood insurance. Webb, who has long called the home his family heirloom, disputes the demolition order since he has paid his taxes and invested thousands on repairs.  FOX 40

  • Two puppies in Jackson were quarantined after a bat in Tippah County tested positive for rabies on Tuesday—officials from the Mississippi Board of Animal Health and the State Department of Health warned that rabies is present in bats and wild animals across the region.  FOX 40
