COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Parham Bridges Park has a new fence eight feet high along Old Canton and Ridgewood roads, a pickleball court, and plans to upgrade the children’s area and replace bridges over Hanging Moss Creek. Lefleur East Foundation will use a $750,000 grant to repair the ditch and add a retention pond.  WLBT News

  • Jelly Roll, a Grammy-nominated artist, will perform his Little Ass Shed Tour with special guest Jay Webb at Brandon Amphitheater on June 3, with tickets on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 7 at Ticketmaster.  WAPT
  • Mississippi Makers Fest returns this Saturday at Entergy Mississippi Plaza in front of the Two Mississippi Museums.   • GasBuddy's study shows that Sunday is the cheapest day to buy gas in Mississippi and Louisiana while prices peak on Wednesday amid volatile trends from the recent war — AAA offers over 30 tips such as fueling when it's cool and avoiding fueling during deliveries.  WAPT
  • Gas prices in Jackson are rising due to the Iran conflict, with the national average nearing $5 per gallon while local pumps average $3.88. Spirit Airlines went out of business on Saturday — higher fuel costs forced the carrier to cancel its bankruptcy exit.  WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mississippi Today is inviting college juniors, seniors and graduate students to apply for two paid, nine-week summer internships from June 8 through Aug. 7, offering hands-on experience in video production or special projects. The application deadline is Tuesday, May 12.  Mississippi Today

  • Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones earned his bachelor's degree after decades of service when he graduated from Jackson State University on Saturday, reflecting his commitment to both work and education. He balanced law enforcement duties with studies to meet his long-held promise.  WAPT
  • Gov. Tate Reeves declared Hurricane Preparedness Week to urge residents to set up emergency plans and gather essential documents before hurricane season begins on June 1. The initiative runs through May 9 and includes advice on preparing go bags & reviewing insurance policies.  WAPT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Roe City Roller Derby kicked off its 2026 season in Jackson on May 4th with a doubleheader, and a home tripleheader scheduled in June will feature a juniors game, Jackson versus Spindle-Top matchup and the Battle of the Dads scrimmage, with the season ending with an away game in Louisiana.  WAPT
  • Jackson State introduced its new head coach for men's basketball, Trey Johnson, at a full media briefing today. He outlined his plans to build the team + inspire players for the coming season.  WLBT News
