ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On May 1, a pedestrian walking westbound on I-20 (Robinson Road) was struck by multiple vehicles at 10:03 p.m. and died, causing a traffic backup as police and EMS responded.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 15, Jackson Police responded to a call near State Street and Culley Drive where they found Earl James Terrell with serious injuries who later died+ surveillance footage showed a suspect fleeing on foot, and the department is asking for public help with the investigation.  FOX 40
  • Last Thursday, police shot and killed Abdullah Chetin during a traffic stop in Richland that turned into a standoff when he barricaded himself in an RV—his son Muhammed disputed investigators’ claims by saying that Chetin, a journalist from Turkey who often criticized government officials, was not driving, did not fire first, and was targeted through a swatting operation linked to false terrorist allegations while the state Bureau of Investigation leads the ongoing inquiry.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • JXN Water reported that sewer system work in calendar year 2024 went 14% over budget with $9.65 million spent on cleaning, repairs, and wastewater management under Ted Henifin, who took charge in September 2023. The quarterly report noted that crews fixed nearly all sanitary overflows—83 of 85 in the first quarter—and inspected almost 905,000 feet of city sewer lines as they continue work on key projects in areas like Queens and the West Bank Interceptor.  WLBT News
  • Mississippi officials remain hopeful FEMA aid will soon help tornado survivors after storms on March 14 and 15 damaged over 900 homes and killed seven people. Gov. Tate Reeves said his request for a major disaster declaration has taken up to 45 days for review — the aid would support individual victims and repair efforts in many counties.  Mississippi Free Press
  • U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson visited Bean Path in Jackson on Friday to support its efforts in advancing technology and workforce training statewide—this nonprofit, founded by Dr. Nashlie Sephus in the Jackson Tech District, provides workshops in robotics and coding for people of all ages.  WAPT
  • Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin reported in a May 1 update that JXN Water faced a cashflow crisis as monthly collections dropped to about $6.1 million while expenses rose above $9 million—federal technical assistance funds are nearly used up. He said the utility has delayed a new workorder system for shutting off non-payers and will work to boost collections in 2025.  WLBT News
