COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local Master Gardeners are preparing for Saturday’s plant sale at Mynelle Gardens—offering plants they nurtured over the past five months to fund local projects and help gardeners find shade plants after last year’s drought. The sale will run from 8 a.m. until noon and will also include free plants for kids.  FOX 40
  • Young people marched through Jackson on Saturday, April 26 to stand against gun violence and support community healing. Organizers said similar events will be held this summer — a measure to encourage more positive activities for youth.  FOX 40

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 25-year-old man drowned at Ross Barnett Reservoir between Ratliff Ferry and Coal Bluff on Saturday — officials from Reservoir Police, Rankin County Emergency Operations Center, and Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks responded to the scene.  FOX 40
  • An 11-year-old in Ridgeland was taken to hospital after being bitten by a neighbor’s dog on Mobile Estates Drive Saturday—police quarantined the dog and details of the child's injuries were not known.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Avery McNair, a senior at Simpson Academy, won the Miss Mississippi’s Teen crown in Vicksburg on Sunday—she will represent the state at Miss America’s Teen, receive a $10,000 scholarship, and promote her emergency preparedness initiative at public events. This marks the 20th year of the pageant with 21 delegates competing for the title.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor signed a law that will make it illegal to camp on public property unless local governments designate areas. Law enforcement will give a 24-hour notice and then remove belongings with a $50 fine—Rep. Shanda Yates said the measure targets blight and takes effect July 1—local advocates worry that homeless encampments may simply shift.  FOX 40
