CRIME NEWS

  • A detainee was found dead in his cell at Raymond Detention Center — officials said an investigation is underway.  WLBT News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nine Mississippi high school seniors were named semifinalists for the 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars program by the Mississippi Department of Education on April 22. They were picked from thousands of candidates nationwide—up to 161 will become Presidential Scholars—based on academic, artistic, technical, leadership and community achievements.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson City Council rejected a proposed water rate increase by Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin on Tuesday because council members said the increase was too high for residents. They noted that improving cost savings and collections is needed before considering future rate hikes.  FOX 40
  • The Jackson City Council approved a pilot program with Flock Safety Raven equipment — a new system to detect and pinpoint gunshots — that will be installed in South Jackson within 30 days and will run for six months, with chief Joseph Wade saying the city will seek extra funding if the pilot succeeds.  FOX 40
