BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A Jackson developer requested regulators on March 2 to rule on building a 350-MW natural gas plant for a proposed industrial campus in Ridgeland; the campus would include AI data centers and semiconductor fabrication, allowing companies to generate power without charging ratepayers (PSC ruling awaited). - ➤ Delta Utilities plans to buy Spire Mississippi’s natural gas distribution company that serves about 18,000 homes, businesses, and industrial customers in south central Mississippi. More than 35 local employees will join Delta Utilities when the deal closes near the end of 2026—customers will not be affected. WAPT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Belhaven University students premiere a series of short films about Jackson’s historic Greenwood Cemetery today at 6:30 p.m. at the McCravey-Triplett Student Center (highlighting stories of notable local figures) before the films are uploaded online. Mississippi Today
- ➤ Free concerts will soon be held at Smith Park, thanks to Downtown Jackson Partners (and the Levitt Foundation), offering locals the chance to enjoy live music outdoors. WLBT News

- ➤ Mississippi expanded preschool access and improved quality with a report from the National Institute for Early Education Research ranking it 29th in 4-year-old enrollment, up from 31st last year. State pre-K enrollment rose by 931 to 8,076 children — meeting all 10 quality benchmarks. WAPT
- ➤ Jackson State University has improved campus security by installing 31 emergency towers (linking audio and visual systems directly to Public Safety) and increasing blue light camera coverage from 33% to 77% since last academic year to boost campus safety. WAPT
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A recent American Lung Association study shows the Jackson-Vicksburg-Brookhaven metro area ranks low for air quality with ozone levels at 143rd out of 226 and particle pollution at 154th out of 224 (with Hinds County worst); Hinds County resident Otha Kelly urged companies to cut back on pollutants to protect health. - ➤ The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks warns that alligator sightings are rising in eight common areas such as the Pearl River & Mississippi Gulf Coast as warmer weather increases activity. - ➤ Jewish leaders from Mississippi met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to urge more security funding after a January arson attack at Beth Israel in Jackson; board member Michele Schipper said the cameras funded by the Nonprofit Security Grant Program helped find the suspect (Spencer Pittman) and could prevent future attacks.
