CRIME NEWS

  • Jackson police arrested 48-year-old Calvin Horton — who had been on the run for nearly a decade — on Friday and charged him with murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm connected to the 2016 killing of 21-year-old Tyshun Robinson on Belvedere Drive.  FOX 40
  • A 48-year-old man named Calvin Horton was arrested without bond for the November 22 cold case murder of Tyshun Robinson — officers found a burning Cadillac on Belvedere Drive where Robinson suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and Horton faces charges of murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today is the last chance to vote absentee in person ahead of Tuesday’s municipal primary runoff election where Jackson municipal clerk offices are open from 8 a.m. until noon. Mail-in absentee ballots must be postmarked by April 22 and received by 5 p.m. on April 30 + polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.  WAPT
  • City leaders said the 2023 audit remains unfinished and no CPA firm has been hired for the 2024 audit due October 1—this delay could risk bond funding for the renovations at the Russell C. Davis Planetarium and affect reimbursements. Council members have directed officials to review contract costs and prepare a new request for proposals after repeated past delays.  FOX 40
  • Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba answered a Mississippi Free Press questionnaire ahead of the April 22 runoff as he seeks a third term—he cited accomplishments like securing major water funding and paving 144 streets and outlined plans for further street repairs, blight removal, and enhanced public safety measures.  Mississippi Free Press
  • Thirteen Jackson voters were interviewed by Mississippi Today from April 8 to April 17 as they shared mixed reactions to a primary where state Sen. John Horhn led and Mayor Lumumba advanced to a runoff set for April 22. Fewer than one fourth of the 114000 registered voters took part, and many expressed plans to study the candidates’ proposals further & ask questions about how to address Jackson’s issues.  Mississippi Today
  • A Hinds County chancery judge denied a name change request by a 16-year-old transitioning teen and the Mississippi Supreme Court upheld the decision on Apr. 17— the court said the teen must mature more before filing a new request, with one justice dissenting over the record's sufficiency.  FOX 40
