- ➤ South Jackson residents report a growing sinkhole on Brookwood Place that has been neglected for three years, causing foul odors and sewage seepage near Lake Dockery. City officials say they are checking with utility companies to fix the hazard that endangers children and pedestrians. WLBT News

- ➤ Lemuria Books staff surprised owner John Evans at the store’s 50th anniversary event held at Cathead Distillery on Saturday, Apr. 11 by unveiling its new Mississippi Writers Trail marker (the only local marker for a bookstore), which could boost local patronage. Mississippi Free Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jackson State University has chosen Dr. Denise Jones Gregory as its new president after an eight-month national search, stepping in immediately after serving as interim since May 2025 (JSU’s 14th leader); state higher education leaders express confidence she will guide the campus forward. - ➤ The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning held a second round of interviews on Thursday in its eight-month search for a new Jackson State University president. It plans to name the leader by the end of the spring semester (candidates remain confidential). WAPT
- ➤ Hinds Community College announced that longtime president Dr. Clyde Muse died on April 15 at age 96 after more than 40 years of service beginning in 1978. Visitation is set for Monday, April 20 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Cain-Cochran Hall on the Raymond campus + a funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. WAPT

- ➤ Mississippi Supreme Court reversed a lower court ruling in the Paula Denison case against MORA on Thursday, saying the trial court wrongly used outside materials to dismiss the claims. The decision leaves MORA’s immunity unaddressed as the case moves forward (court records). WLBT News

- ➤ Greenwood Leflore Hospital filed for bankruptcy Wednesday to negotiate a potential transaction with the University of Mississippi Medical Center and continue Delta region health care. The move aims to restructure debt and protect cash reserves as talks progress. WLBT News
