  • A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday on Monument Street in Jackson to launch Leonard Court—a new $29 million low income housing project spanning 5.8 acres. The development will offer a mix of 1- to 4-bedroom homes and duplexes and will reserve all units for residents earning less than 60% of the area median income.  WAPT

CRIME NEWS

  • The Rankin County Sheriff's Department is investigating a bomb threat made by phone to Northwest Rankin High School—law enforcement swept the campus, finding no bombs, and officials maintained controlled movement for student safety.  WAPT
  • A Mississippi grand jury indicted two Capitol Police officers for manslaughter in the 2022 shooting death of 25-year-old Jaylen Lewis during a traffic stop in Jackson — the indictment was filed on March 14 and says the officers acted without a reasonable belief of danger.  Mississippi Free Press

  • The Mississippi Mass Choir tops the Billboard Mediabase Gospel Airplay Charts today with their new single 'Only One Way Home,' marking the second No. 1 song from their album We Still Believe. The album was recorded in Jackson at Malaco Records, where the choir has worked nearly 40 years — a testament to their lasting local impact.  WAPT

  • On April 15th, a federal court ruled that the redrawn Senate map did not strengthen Black voting power in DeSoto County—lawmakers now have seven days to submit a new map meeting court orders.  Mississippi Free Press
  • Congressman Bennie Thompson endorsed Senator John Horhn for Jackson mayor on Wednesday, saying Horhn is better suited to handle the city's challenges. Horhn captured 48% of the vote in the primary + he will face Mayor Lumumba in a runoff election on Tuesday.  WLBT News
