Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Barry Tatum Yawn and Dawn Marie Martin after executing a search warrant Thursday at a home on Tami Avenue near Richland — officers recovered packages of methamphetamine and a 9 mm handgun while both suspects remain held without bond.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a previous order that had allowed JXN Water to access SNAP recipient data for its discount program, leaving the utility to rely on customer sign-ups—fewer than 10 customers have confirmed eligibility. The utility will raise rates by about 12% in June despite concerns from city officials.  Mississippi Today
  • Interim Water Manager Ted Henifin told the Jackson City Council on April 8 that dwindling federal funds have forced a nearly 12% water rate increase to cover daily operational costs and debt repayment. He will travel to Washington to ask Congress to allow capital funds to be used for everyday operations.  Mississippi Free Press
  • The U.S. Fifth Circuit reversed Judge Wingate’s order that required state and federal officials to release SNAP data for JXN Water’s plan to give a $30 discount on water bills for customers receiving aid — a measure meant to help low-income households. The ruling — based on municipal code rules rather than federal authority — stops Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin from using the data for his discount program.  WLBT News
  • Retired Air Force lieutenant colonel Tim Henderson finished third in Jackson’s mayoral primary on April 9th and reconsidered leaving politics as his 3,499 votes showed strong support against the city’s entrenched elite. He met with campaign teams and local leaders last week and said he will push for accountability by supporting an Office of Ethics and Accountability—aiming to restore trust in Jackson’s government.  Mississippi Today
