CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jermaine White was convicted of murdering Kiera Poole, 21, and Samantha Cannon, 22, at the Rainbow Motel on January 23rd, 2022—he received two life sentences plus an additional 10 years for felony firearm possession. WAPT
- ➤ Capitol police responded—just before 2 p.m. Thursday—to a reported shooting at a Marathon gas station on Gallatin Street where a witness said a man shot someone before the victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital. WAPT
- ➤ Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said community tips helped secure arrests in two murder cases—22-year-old Denarius McDonald was charged with capital murder for breaking into a woman's home and killing her on Exchange Drive last September while also sexually assaulting her, and 38-year-old Jacob Falcon and his 23-year-old nephew Levi Falcon were charged with murdering 34-year-old Antwoine Thomas after his car was set on fire on Stokes Robertson Road in early March—while police continue to seek a 35-year-old suspect named Justin Wallace. - ➤ Dr. Deidra Snell, a dentist in Northeast Jackson, was shocked when she received a $91,000 water bill that was corrected to $190.52 after JXN Water found a clerical error while its website was offline for maintenance. She said the mistake delayed her work—JXN Water has updated its billing system to electronically transfer information to prevent future errors. WAPT
- ➤ Residents in Jackson have been frustrated by a large sinkhole on Denver Street called Hell Hole that has been a safety hazard for over a year and could swallow a car, while city officials say they are waiting for JXN Water to fix pipes under the hole before filling it—repairs are expected to start within the next three weeks. - ➤ The Mississippi Humanities Council had its federal funding cut by DOGE after an email on April 2, and executive director Dr. Stuart Rockoff said the move was callous—forcing the council to freeze all grants and rework its budget. The council, which funds history and cultural programs, had to postpone its May 1 grant deadline as it awaits future funding. Mississippi Free Press

- ➤ On Thursday, the Mississippi State Medical Association unveiled a marker at Cornerstone Plaza in Ridgeland to honor African American health care workers and the segregated hospitals that served Black communities (including Colored King’s Daughters and Matty Hersee).
