BUSINESS NEWS

  • Shares of Ridgeland-based Cal-Maine Foods fell in after-hours trading Tuesday after the company said the antitrust division of the U.S. Department of Justice began investigating its egg prices. The company said it received notice of the probe last month and is cooperating as rising egg prices from a bird flu outbreak have driven record costs.  WAPT

CRIME NEWS

  • Jacob Falcon, 38, and his nephew Levi Falcon, 23, were given a $25,000 bond each on Wednesday as they face murder charges for killing Antwoine Thomas whose body was found in a burning SUV on Stokes Robertson Road in early March—police said more arrests are expected.  WAPT
  • Darius McDonald, charged with capital murder for fatally stabbing Margaret Washington in September 2024 on Exchange Drive, appeared before a municipal court judge Wednesday and is held without bond—police have not released details on any relationship or motive between the pair.  WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Belhaven University have built Bellcraft, a detailed Minecraft replica of their campus using a full school map. At least 20 students worked over two years on the project—new additions will be made in coming weeks while everyone is welcome to explore it now.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed a law that gradually cuts the state's income tax from 4% to 3% by 2030 and could eliminate it by 2040 if revenue benchmarks are met. A 2022 Kentucky measure set revenue triggers for future tax reductions that could lead to eliminating the income tax if the economy grows.  Mississippi Free Press
  • The May 7 deadline for a Real ID is approaching, and residents who do not have the gold star on their driver's license must update it to travel domestically and access federal facilities—Mississippi Driver Service Bureau offices in Jackson and several other cities will be open on Saturdays until May 3.  WAPT
