- ➤ The Rankin County Animal Shelter in Brandon is urging residents to adopt dogs to help ease overcrowding. The shelter, which has only 51 kennels for around 90 dogs, is offering vouchers for spaying and neutering and hopes each dog finds a loving home. WAPT
- ➤ The 2026 Mississippi Team Hope Walk will take place soon in Jackson to raise funds for local charities. Organizers expect community members + local volunteers to join and say details on time, meeting point, and safety measures will be announced shortly. WLBT News
- ➤ A Jackson rescue group is asking for donations after Capitol Police discovered a neglected puppy during a Walgreens break-in — the puppy is now at a local clinic for treatment and will receive full immunizations as rescuers urgently seek a foster home. WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers approved a teacher pay raise bill that gives educators a $2,000 boost after negotiations on March 6 in the House chamber in Jackson. Gov. Reeves now must sign the measure to ensure the raise. Mississippi Today
- ➤ Due to a drop in student enrollment, Jackson Public Schools closed 17 buildings and has sold two while one is pending sale. A bill passed on April 1 will ease restrictions by allowing alternative use of these facilities and give charter schools a 12-month window to decide on purchases. Mississippi Today
- ➤ Jackson Public Schools still faces three accreditation issues after clearing 19 of 22 violations — missing student records at 10 schools have led to hiring more staff and internal policy reviews, and officials warn the district will remain on probation unless it complies with Education Department requirements.
