- ➤ Today, Hinds County and Jackson partner for the Community Spring Cleanup as volunteers will meet from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Virden Addition, Grove Park, and Queens Community to remove trash and debris from streets — officials and residents hope this effort will spark a change in local attitudes. - ➤ Pearl River Glass was founded by Andrew Young and his college roommate Reggie Dufrees in October 1975 and has been a local mainstay on Milsaps Avenue for 50 years. - ➤ Capitol police arrested 22-year-old Michael McLeod + 21-year-old Marquavius McLeod for a mass shooting on March 22 near Pearl and Lamar streets that injured 7 and killed 21-year-old Cortez George after Hal's St. Paddy's Parade, and additional arrests are expected. WAPT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Seven candidates for the Jackson City Council met at the Willowwood Community Center in South Jackson on March 10 to share plans for fighting crime, boosting affordable housing and repairing aging infrastructure—aiming to tackle long-standing problems in our city. The event highlighted proposals for proactive safety measures, new housing projects and improved public works to support Jackson’s future. Mississippi Free Press
- ➤ Federal funds have allowed repairs on Jackson’s old water system as workers fixed leaks and replaced hydrants—however only about half the mayoral candidates discuss the challenges of upgrading pipes and sewage systems, leaving voters to soon choose leaders who can manage these issues. - ➤ Gov. Tate Reeves signed House Bill 1 on March 27, which will gradually lower the state income tax to 3% by 2030, reduce the grocery tax from 7% to 5% starting July 1, and raise the gas tax from 18 to 21 cents per gallon beginning July 1. State leaders will adjust the gas tax every other year with further increases scheduled to reach 27 cents by July 1, 2027—measures that reform Mississippi's tax system. Mississippi Free Press
