COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dover and her husband started the group—Our Home—to buy and fix a state forfeited house on Capitol Street to fight neighborhood blight. They said eight local residents will learn how to renovate as the couple plans to spend about $50,000 on roof, plumbing, and electrical repairs.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was sentenced for fatally stabbing his paralyzed father — the attack took place in a Jackson home.  WLBT News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Community organizations hosted a Jackson mayoral debate where six of 15 candidates answered note card questions about plans to revitalize the city as the primary election approaches. The unscripted forum allowed voters to learn about each candidate's vision for change.  WAPT
  • Jackson City Council approved an agreement for Downtown Jackson Partners to take over maintenance of Smith Park, a historic 2.4-acre green space in downtown. The group will repair sidewalks, drainage, and landscaping and launch a spring series called Hump Day starting April 2 — with future work funded by the Community Foundation for Mississippi.  WLBT News
  • Since 2018, Judge Carlton Reeves declared that Hinds County failed to fix unsafe jail conditions and has now ordered a receivership to address constitutional violations at the jail— the county has challenged the order and parties will file proposed changes within 21 days.  Mississippi Today
  • State lawmakers approved a gas tax increase that will add 3 cents each year for the next three years to raise roughly $300 million for road and bridge projects—MDOT says rising material and labor costs make the change necessary. The governor is expected to sign the legislation so the state can start funding projects like widening Interstate 55.  WAPT
  • Speaker Jason White said that the Governor is set to sign House Bill 1 this week to eliminate the state income tax but Senate Bill 3095 brings trigger provisions and changes to the state retirement system that will be negotiated. Lawmakers will meet over the next two weeks to adjust these details—negotiations continue as the session nears its end.  FOX 40
