COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, March 18th, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History accepted a $1 million check from the Community Foundation of Mississippi for a new green space to replace the abandoned Eudora Welty Library—models show a tree house play area, walking trails and water fountains near the Two Mississippi Museums. Michael Morris said the library will be demolished by the end of the year and work on the park will begin soon after with an extra $3 million from the Legislature for the project named after Margaret Ann Crigler. - ➤ Doug Boone, a longtime Jackson resident, will take over as executive director of the Fondren Renaissance Foundation on April 14 (replacing longtime director Rebecca Garrison). He plans to lead projects to revive the Fondren neighborhood (including initiatives under Fondren Forward) that have helped the area grow. WLBT News

- ➤ Ward 5 Councilman Vernon Hartley introduced a proposal Tuesday to require nightclub security to complete an eight-hour JPD training course—this follows a January shooting that killed one person and injured another. Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes also put forth a resolution for businesses near schools to hire security guards after a recent fight near Callaway High School. WAPT
- ➤ The Jackson City Council voted on Tuesday to adopt new rules for medical cannabis businesses that require a $1,000 fee each year and set standards for odor, lighting, security and waste disposal. The rules limit business hours and overnight cash storage and will take effect in 30 days while some council members voiced concerns about drug abuse in poorer neighborhoods. WLBT News
- ➤ On March 17, a forum at the Afrikan Art Gallery featured nine mayoral candidates discussing plans for working together after the upcoming election. Voter Gwendolyn Chapman asked if the winner would unite the community—only candidate Lumumba answered while others focused on policy attacks. Mississippi Today
- ➤ A forum in the race for Jackson mayor was held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex at Millsaps College—sponsored by Millsaps, the Greater Belhaven Foundation and the League of Women Voters. Ten of 20 candidates participated at the forum, which preceded the municipal primary scheduled for Tuesday, April 1. WAPT
