  • Extra Table launched the March of the Mayors campaign to fill food pantries today in Jackson (the initiative calls on local mayors to drive community support).  WLBT News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longtime civil rights activist Angela Davis (former UC professor) spoke at Tougaloo College in Jackson on Wednesday, Jan. 28, joining JSU Professor Ebony Lumumba for a discussion on civil rights history and the need for new strategies in changing times.  Mississippi Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new analysis from Construction Coverage shows that Jackson residents face rising rent costs as the median rental is $1,411 with three- and four-bedroom homes at $1,608 and $1,777 plus shelter costs grew 3.6% when overall inflation was 3.0%. The study, using HUD and Census data from over 380 metro areas, highlights ongoing housing affordability challenges.  WAPT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter storm over the weekend caused 14 deaths and damaged 223 homes, 10 businesses, and 7 farms, with 12 roads destroyed and nearly 100,000 power outages statewide. State agencies + the National Guard and FEMA are clearing roads and delivering supplies to help affected communities.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson City Council approved new safety rules for Hal's St. Paddy's Parade held March 28 in downtown Jackson. The ordinance bans guns + glass bottles, grills, open flames, boomboxes and ATVs, and changes the parade route to allow police + security quick access.  WAPT
  • Local lawmakers are set to propose a bill that will create emergency alerts for missing young adults (ages 18 to 23) to help families and speed up response times, with details to be discussed in upcoming sessions.  WLBT News

  • UMMC researchers helped update national guidelines for cervical cancer screening by expanding high-risk HPV strain detection — part of the STRIDES collaboration with the National Cancer Institute and the Mississippi State Department of Health; the new methods aim to improve diagnosis and care in Mississippi.  WAPT
