Good morning, Jackson.

Extra shelter beds opened ahead of the forecast ice storm may not be enough to house all of Jackson’s unhoused residents, as some centers are full and a key facility remains closed until heaters are fixed (forcing many to weather the cold outdoors).

Ice and below-freezing temperatures are affecting roads today as MDOT crews salt interstates and bridges in 25 northern counties and Entergy prepares for outages; local officials advise residents to winterize pipes (using drip faucets and open cabinets) to avoid plumbing issues.

State officials report that shelters and warming centers will be open today to help residents stay safe amid icy cold weather, and locals are advised to check with community agencies + local listings for exact hours and locations.

Beltway Heating, Air and Plumbing in Hanover advises Jackson residents to disconnect hoses, drip hot and cold water, lower thermostat settings, and unplug electronics to prevent frozen pipes and surge damage during a winter storm power outage (owner Ryan Grimes stresses safety to avoid costly repairs).

A big winter storm approaching our area has raised anxiety levels among residents, and psychiatrist Dr. Frank Clark advises them to prepare + stay connected with trusted friends for support.

He recommends stocking up on essentials, taking breaks from media coverage and using mental health resources if needed.
