  • Councilman Kenneth Stokes invites Jackson residents to join free MLK Day celebrations from Thursday, Jan. 15 to Monday, Jan. 19. The events include an awards banquet at Jackson State University Ballrooms A-B, a youth talent show at Lanier High, a parade from Freedom Corner, and a worship service.  WAPT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A $50 million investment project broke ground in Jackson today to boost the local economy and support new business opportunities. Project developers say work will begin soon to benefit the community.  WLBT News

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal prosecutors charged 26 people for a college basketball betting scheme (including three Mississippi residents) that fixed 29 games, one being a Dec. 5 match between Alabama State and Southern Miss, as part of a scheme running from Sept. 2022 to Feb. 2025.  WAPT
  • The Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson suffered fire damage and recalled its history when it was bombed by the Ku Klux Klan in 1967, marking a past instance of targeted violence.  Mississippi Free Press

  • Newton County artist Joe Overstreet’s Taking Flight exhibit presents three immersive geometric collections at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson (curated by Kaegan Sparks). The show is open until Jan. 25.  Mississippi Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mississippi Department of Education & the State Board of Education have taken over Wilkinson County School District after two years with F ratings due to an inability to provide stable education. Lee Coats was named interim superintendent as the district becomes a District of Transformation.  WAPT
  • Mississippi lawmakers advanced a school choice bill after lengthy debate at the Capitol, passing House Bill 2 by a 61-59 vote to direct public funding to private school vouchers — aimed at providing more school options. The decision reveals divisions among lawmakers on its impact on public education.  WLBT News
  • Roadmaster Drivers School is investing $1.5 million to renovate its training facility in Jackson to meet rising industry demand. The upgrades will modernize classrooms and simulators to help more students start their driving careers.  WLBT News
