  • Crystal Springs daycare is receiving local support as it fights to keep its classes open amid challenges, with neighbors donating resources & time this week to help maintain care for children.  WLBT News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson State University professor LaWanda Dickens founded the Magnolia Literacy Project to unite readers and writers (young and old) through virtual book clubs and an annual event at Jackson State. She mentors local authors and will launch a poetry club for older Black women to further literacy.  Mississippi Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Jan. 5, Lt. Gov. Hosemann announced plans to raise teacher pay for K-12, community college and university educators during this legislative session at a press forum held at Hal and Mal’s in Jackson. He aims to improve competitiveness as Mississippi works to boost its education ranking.  Mississippi Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House Speaker Jason White and Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann announced plans to ease student transfers and use public funds for private schooling during separate events on Monday, Jan. 5. White will give lower-income students priority and the Senate may remove the home district approval requirement, they said.  Mississippi Today

  • A local investor purchased the old Marriott Hotel and will renovate it soon in Jackson, with details to be shared when plans are finalized (updates pending).  WLBT News
