BUSINESS NEWS

  • Social 21 Bistro, known for its live music in Jackson, closed after five years on Jan. 2 — it thanked loyal patrons for their support, with no reason given for the shutdown.  WAPT
  • Crechale’s Cafe, a mainstay along Highway 80 for 70 years, will close permanently on February 15. Owner Anderson Crechale thanked employees and customers (following Bob Crechale’s passing) as the restaurant winds down operations over the next six weeks.  FOX 40
  • Jackson Bar Social 21 Bistro closed Friday morning on County Line Road, prompting concern among local business owners as additional businesses on County Line have also shut down. Owner Eric Collins of Thee Herbal Blessing said he believes these closures do not define Jackson’s future — offering hope for entrepreneurs.  WAPT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson native Andrew Young celebrated 50 years of his Pearl River Glass Studio, a local art center in the Midtown Arts District that has enhanced landmarks like the Capitol and churches with his stained glass windows. The studio is expanding its storefront—adding new kilns and classes to unite local artists.  Mississippi Free Press
  • Mississippi Free Press co-founder Donna Ladd marks a leadership change as Kimberly Griffin begins transitioning out of daily operations. The newsroom, which has grown sharply, will soon see new leaders like Tami Jones, Chris Ellis, and Erica Powe take the reins (as the organization strengthens its eight-bureau statewide coverage).  Mississippi Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi’s Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team began examining cases after Gov. Tate Reeves signed Senate Bill 2886 on April 15, 2025 — the 13-member group will meet quarterly to review missed intervention opportunities and help shape future policy changes.  Mississippi Today
  • Mississippi farmers will soon receive federal aid under the USDA’s $12 billion Farmer Bridge Assistance Program with per-acre payments of $132 for rice, $117 for cotton, $44 for corn and $30 for soybeans. More details on eligibility and timelines are available from the USDA.  WAPT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mississippi Baptist Medical Center welcomed its first baby of the new year on Jan. 1 when Joshua Maurice James Collins was born at 12:16 a.m. in its downtown facility (the family received a basket of gifts), marking a hopeful start for many more births this year.  FOX 40

SPORTS NEWS

  • Trinidad Chambliss threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns and Lucas Carneiro's field goal with 6 seconds left gave Ole Miss a 39-34 win over No. 3 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The Rebels advance to a Fiesta Bowl semifinal against Miami next Thursday.  WAPT
  • The Ole Miss Rebels advanced to the College Football Playoffs semifinals after a last-second win in the Sugar Bowl, with Lucas Carneiro’s 55-yard field goal and a safety boosting their score. They will face the Miami Hurricanes on January 8 at the Fiesta Bowl.  FOX 40
  • The Rebels scored what may be their biggest win in school history when they defeated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 in New Orleans. Oddsmakers favor Miami in next Thursday's Fiesta Bowl in Tempe and coach Pete Golding is eyeing transfer kicker Lucas Carneiro as the postseason unfolds.  Mississippi Today
