  • Crechale’s Cafe, a longtime restaurant along Highway 80, will close on February 15 after 70+ years in business. The owner thanked employees and customers for their support following Bob Crechale’s passing.  FOX 40

  • Mississippi families marked New Year's Day by stocking up on cabbage, greens, collards & black-eyed peas to bring good luck, while some followed old tradition with chitterlings or barbecue ribs to invite prosperity. Gym memberships also spiked as many aimed to start healthy habits.  WAPT
  • Mississippi rolled into the 137th Rose Parade on New Year's Day at 10 a.m. on 16 WAPT, showcasing its creative history with a Visit Mississippi float led by Kermit the Frog and featuring tributes to local artists plus musician Charlie Worsham who performed reworked lyrics honoring state artistic heroes.  WAPT

  • On Wednesday, multiple agencies fought a bush fire near the 1400 block of Clara Foote Road in Rankin County (using Forestry Commission equipment to create firebreaks) and contained the blaze that burned 60 acres without threatening any structures.  FOX 40

  • Mississippi Baptist Medical Center welcomed its first baby of the new year when Joshua Maurice James Collins was born at 12:16 a.m. — the seven-pound, 10-ounce boy marks a hopeful start for 2026.  FOX 40
  • Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson was named to Becker's Hospital Review's 2025 Great Hospitals in America list for excellence in care, safety and innovation, earning recognition from U.S. News & World Report and safety awards; the hospital has 638 beds, specialty centers, and is ranked No. 1 in the state for seven years.  WAPT
  • The first baby born in 2026 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson arrived at 12:16 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2026, weighing 7 lbs, 10 oz + mother Shakerria Burns said he chose to be a New Year's baby while the hospital celebrated the moment with a basket of gifts.  WAPT
  • Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in downtown Jackson welcomed its first baby of 2026, Joshua Maurice James Collins, born at 12:16 a.m. to Shakerria Burns and Josh Collins. The hospital gifted the family a basket to celebrate the new year.  WLBT News
